A recent article posted on Hartford Business.com lauds the University of Connecticut and other state colleges for adding non-matriculated online business courses to their curricula, helping the state’s professional population get a leg up on training to improve employee skills.
Businesses in Connecticut are realizing that online education gives employers and employees the freedom to pick and choose courses to make up for shortfalls in training, without sacrificing time away from the job. As the need for myriad credentials changes rapidly, learners are afforded the ability to take courses on their personal time frames as opposed to leaving the workforce to pursue an advanced education. Schools are complying with this need by offering targeted business courses that are “high demand” and “high enrollment” in areas such as accounting, education, human resource management, survey research and other topics.
Student demographics have been changing over the past few years to include a more mature, graduate level population, while the undergraduate population seems to be shrinking.
“With the current economy, fewer and fewer employers want to see their employees leave the company to receive full-time education,” said Peter Diplock, interim assistant vice provost for the center for excellence in teaching and learning at the University of Connecticut. “The opportunity with online education avoids this issue, allowing employees to stay in their routine and mix classes in when the timing works for them.”
Frank Mulgrew, president of Post University’s Online Education Institute added, “It provides a way for employees to build on existing skills while developing new ones, and gives them a chance to immediately apply what they’re learning to solve real business challenges. By necessity, we all have to become lifelong learners, and online higher education makes it possible for working professionals to get advanced education without interruption to their careers.”
In Connecticut, more than 6.1 million students were enrolled in at least one online course during the fall 2010 semester, showing an increase of 560,000 students over the previous year, according to a report by the Sloan Consortium.
