When primary school educators think of inviting guests into the classroom, it’s often in relation to a career day event or a lesson in safety. Short and sweet. A firefighter, policeman or bus driver might come in and speak to students about fire safety, drugs and alcohol, proper conduct, etc.
In high school learning systems, the issues may mature (drugs and alcohol may become AIDS, becomes school violence, etc.) but the trend remains the same. There are also career counselors and college preparation speakers, but they have little to do with what’s actually being taught in the classroom.
Why not use outside experts in a more involved and meaningful way? Academics and professionals are often more than happy to contribute to the enrichment of a classroom learning system.
