The concept of working with organizations and professionals is catching on across school districts. Washington Latin School, a charter school in Washington, D.C., provides a collaborative learning system for its students similar to that of Stevens Elementary School. It holds a dozen partnerships with private-sector and cultural institutions in Washington.
An arrangement with the Shakespeare Theater Company, for instance, allows the school to teach “Twelfth Night” at each grade level with the help of experts. Students also help with the theater’s rendition of the play, providing an exciting drama learning system.
Other teachers work with retired scientists to create involved experiments related to the school’s science learning systems. And a local nonprofit group, Retired Scientists, Engineers, & Technicians (ReSET) pairs volunteers with scientific backgrounds with teachers at the school.
