Many e-learning course developers make dangerous assumptions about assessments as well. In Mark Simon’s article, he warns against thinking of e-learning assessments in the same terms as paper-based ones.

Don’t make the mistake, he tells us, of putting off assessment planning until you’re nearing the end of the course. On an LMS, an assessment can fill many roles and serve different functions, but you need to think ahead.

The truth is, a final assessment on an LMS-hosted course serves several purposes. Of course, it reveals whether or not a student has mastered the material or not, just like a traditional assessment. But it also can be used to track an LMS student’s professional development or certification requirements.
