To continue with the question posed in the previous post, is it strategically smart for companies to use open source LMSs? Is it ultimately profitable? If not, why do so many LMS platform vendors use such software? It would seem counter-intuitive for a vendor to give without hoping for something in return. 

Some say the answer is unquestionably yes—it’s ultimately strategic to use open source software. The benefits are numerous. Using open source software as the basis of your development can profoundly reduce your time and costs. In addition, using open source software and marketing can dramatically increase the chances of your product reaching the widest market possible, giving you more opportunity to compete with the larger LMS product vendors, and also promoting individual programmers.
